Because the St. Louis region is in proximity to the seismically active New Madrid Fault, customers should be aware of the effects an earthquake of major magnitude may have on their natural gas service and how to deal with those effects before and after an earthquake strikes. Laclede Gas has prepared a 12 tips for earthquake preparations document, which is downloadable as a PDF from this site.
If your electric is out, your natural gas furnace is most likely not working as well. This is because most gas furnaces rely on 110 volts of electricity for the unit’s blower motor to operate. If you are in this situation, Laclede Gas reminds you to be careful as you look for alternative methods to heat your home.
Always be mindful of the dangers of carbon monoxide and do not use any natural gas, propane or kerosene space heating appliances as alternative heating sources, unless they are properly ventilated. Also, please note that ovens and stoves are designed for cooking and are not viable heating alternatives. When using any appliance you should do so in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
