Meldon Quarells, Audre Chestnutt and Steve Ferris are one amazing team. On a Saturday in October, all three donated their time to weatherize the home of someone in need, preparing it against the chill of winter.
“It’s an enriching experience,” said Chestnutt. “WeatherWise is a great opportunity for us, as employees of Laclede Gas, to get out in the community and visit with our customers one-on-one.” Quarells added, “I’ve participated for many years and never tire of the satisfaction that come from knowing that what we’ve done today will help someone stay warm.”
Since 1996, employees of Laclede Gas Company have volunteered their personal time to reach out to the truly deserving. Teams of three or four head out to weatherize homes throughout the region. WeatherWise is an annual initiative created to give back to the community. Since inception, Laclede volunteers have weatherized more than 800 homes.
Many people make the effort possible including Laclede employees, spouses and family members. "It's really a team effort," said Gloria Thirdkill, Manager of Community Relations. "We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers who come back every year."
In addition to recruiting the volunteer crews, Laclede also purchases all of the weatherization kits and tools needed for the campaign. Any and all unused resources at the end of the day are donated to EnergyWise.
Weatherization helps reduce the overall energy use, saving customer dollars. In addition, weatherization provides a more comfortable living environment and may improve the health and safety of the recipient.
In addition to weatherproofing, there are steps everyone can take to minimize their energy usage: - Install storm doors and windows to help prevent loss
Open draperies on sunny days to allow sunlight to heat the home and close them at night to help keep out the cold
Encourage children (and others) to not run in and out of the house unnecessarily
Invest in attic insulation – it lowers the cost of both heating and cooling
If you have a fireplace, keep the damper closed when not in use
