Home energy audits are often thought of as the answer to high energy bills, but issues with homes are often more complicated, involving moisture leakage, unbalanced heating, or other problems that won't be solved by simply adding insulation or a higher efficiency furnace. Identifying and correcting all the issues within a home at the same time can cost less, save more, and improve the comfort and healthiness of your home.
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, a national program from the U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE, offers a comprehensive, whole-house approach to improving energy efficiency and comfort in your home, while helping to protect the environment. This program uses the ENERGY STAR brand to encourage and facilitate whole-house energy improvements to existing housing. It focuses on the private-sector contractors and service professionals who currently work on existing homes replacing HVAC systems, adding insulation, installing new windows, etc.
The Missouri Botanical Garden’s EarthWays Center coordinates Home Performance with ENERGY STAR in the St. Louis bi-state area. It provides contractor referrals to help audit and improve comfort, health, efficiency, and durability of existing homes. For a list of qualified contractors, please contact:

Or, visit the St. Louis Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program website.
St. Louis Home Performance with ENERGY STAR also assists contractors in obtaining certification under the Building Performance Institute (BPI) standards. A participating BPI certified contractor can identify and fix a variety of home energy efficiency problems, including poor insulation, air leaks through cracks and gaps, and ineffective moisture control by first performing a home assessment. Upon completion of the inspection, the contractor will provide an itemized cost estimate for each suggested improvement.
While St. Louis Home Performance with ENERGY STAR is your connection to local contractors, the U.S. EPA has several online resources in the Home Improvement section of its ENERGY STAR website to help you get started.
