In late 2008, Laclede Gas Company joined with ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to help one deserving family get the home of their dreams. In addition to donating their time and resources in relocating natural gas services; Laclede also worked with the builders of the new home to certify that it met the requirements of the Green Building Initiative (GBI). Laclede is an industry leader in GBI, an environmental approach to construction. Laclede defined the verification procedures which have been adopted by the national Home Builders Association.
In addition, Laclede donated a gas grill for backyard barbequing and fed more than 500 project volunteers.
The St. Louis edition focused on the Martirez family. Dawn and Emmanuel Martirez have three children: daughter Elle and twins Evan and Alex. Dawn’s experience as a pediatric cancer nurse prepared her for the challenges of her own situation; both Evan and Alex have extremely rare genetic conditions. As the twins got older, the family’s Shrewsbury home and its cramped space, narrow hallways, steep stairs and single bathroom that is not ADA compliant was becoming problematic for the twins’ development. While the Martirez family vacationed at Disney World, the show completely tore down the existing structure (7329 Brunswick, Shrewsbury) and rebuilt a home that fulfills all of the Martirez family’s current and future needs.
The episode aired in November 2008. Later, Laclede's involvement was highlighted in a follow-up program on St. Louis' ABC affiliate KDNL.
