Increasingly builders are taking an environmentally friendly approach to construction projects. Known as “green” or “sustainable” building, it involves a dedicated practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use energy, water and materials; while reducing the impact on the environment through better siting, design and construction. “Green” builders look at every phase of the construction to develop more energy-efficient, healthier and environmentally-responsible facilities.
The Laclede Gas Company serves as an industry leader in the “green" building movement, promoting energy conservation and innovative environmental practices in new construction. For many years, Laclede Gas has offered customer assistance programs and workshops aimed at informing customers on how to more efficiently use natural gas in their homes and businesses. The Company also sponsors "green" conferences (a listing of current and past conferences are listed in the menu on the left).
In 2005, Laclede Gas partnered with the Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis to bring the Green Building Initiative (GBI) to the region. The program, based on the National Association of Home Builder’s (NAHB) Model Green Home Building Guidelines, is designed to offer local builders information on products and building practices to help meet buyers’ demands for enhanced environmental quality. As part of the partnership, Laclede Gas developed an inspection and verification process to ensure homes constructed as part of the GBI program adhere to the NAHB guidelines.
Laclede is a member of the National US Green Building Council (USGBC) and serves on the board of the St. Louis Regional Chapter of the USGBC.
In addition, the Laclede Gas Company participates in the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. LEED is a voluntary standard that defines high performance green buildings; ensuring a healthier and environmentally responsible structure.
Laclede's green efforts were highlighted in the April 2008 issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine. A PDF of the story is available below. For more information on Laclede Gas Company’s involvement with green/sustainable building, contact Tom Schultz at firstname.lastname@example.org.
