Natural gas heating is comfortable because air from a typical gas furnace is warmed to about 120 degrees. Air circulated by an electric heat pump is about 95 degrees, which is lower than normal body temperature and is a reason users of electric heat pumps often complain of a cold, "drafty" feeling in their homes. Also, because the air is cooler, the electric heat pump must run more often to maintain the desired temperature. As a result, the electric equipment suffers wear and tear which, when coupled with long hours of summer-time operation, gives it a much shorter service life than a gas furnace.
