Each year, the amount of paper we use in our monthly billing process is the environmental equivalent of powering an average American household for 26 days or nine trees that supply enough oxygen for five people for one year. Startling, isn't it!
We take steps in our daily approach to business to minimize our impact on the environment. The 500,000 square-foot Laclede Gas Building is totally independent of the electric distribution grid and is powered solely by natural gas, the original green energy. The company uses vendors certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization to print its customer bills, newsletters and Annual Report. Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. Laclede also utilizes paper stock that is recyclable and/or consists of post-consumer recycled waste fiber.
We also offer opportunities for you to make a difference: e-bill and Customer Connection.
E-bill allows you to receive and pay your monthly statement electronically, thereby reducing the number of paper bills we print and mail. E-bill is a faster, easier way to receive and pay your gas bill. You can schedule a payment for the exact date you select. Plus, there's no postage to look for or worry about. E-bill is easy, it's fast, it's free and it will save you time and money.
Plus, it’s secure, accurate and free through our partnership with CheckFree (a division of Fiserv), an Internet leader in online billing. To begin the e-bill option, enroll with CheckFree or another online billing service provider. You may also enroll to receive your gas bill electronically through many banks’ bill payment services. Visit your bank’s website to learn more about that option. Please note that some providers charge a monthly fee for their service packages.
Switching to e-bill can make a significant difference. According to Javelin Strategy & Research, if every American household viewed and paid their bills online, the environmental benefits are estimated at: - 2.3 million tons of wood, or 16.5 million trees, saved.

Fuel consumption reduced by 26 million BTUs – enough energy to provide residential power to San Francisco for an entire year.

3.9 billion pounds of CO2 equivalents (greenhouse gases) decreased, the equivalent of removing 355,000 cars from the road.

13 billion gallons of toxic wastewater reduced, enough to fill almost 20,000 swimming pools.

1.6 billion pounds of solid waste removed – equal to 56,000 fully loaded garbage trucks.

8.5 million particulates and 12.6 million nitrogen oxides reduced from the air – on par with taking 763,000 buses and 48,000 18-wheelers off the streets.

Customer Connection is an online account management tool that allows you to monitor your natural gas usage and understand the variables that are driving usage. In addition, your monthly billing statements are archived for viewing and comparison over a 13-month period. In addition, you can determine your Budget Billing amount, enroll in this service, donate to Dollar-Help and/or track your contributions. Coming soon, subscribers will be able to research usage in relation to the outside temperature, view scheduled service requests, and request that natural gas service be turned off.
